Bolton 2-3 Leeds: Player Ratings

Apologies, these ratings will be a little shorter than usual – Aaron’s writing up a more comprehensive report and I didn’t want to spoil it!

Howard – 6

Conceded three, but can’t really be blamed for any of them. Looked competent enough otherwise.

Darby – 5

Not suited to playing as a wing back. Poor marking for the second goal. Played the Leeds man onside for the third. Crossing left much to be desired, too, I’m afraid.

Dervite – 5

Against a very tough Leeds United attack, and the Frenchmen worked hard but struggled at times.

Wheater – 6

Battled very hard against Wood, and did pretty well for most of it. Caught napping for Leeds’ third. Hope injury isn’t serious.

Beevers – 6

Also did reasonably well against a big physical striker in Wood. But then again, that’s what Beevers should be best at.

Taylor – 6

Poor first half, but really came back fighting in the second. Really got stuck in and looked up for it.

Karacan – 5

Not quite at his best – found himself chasing shadows for a bit of the game. He’s better than he showed today.

Vela – 7

Absolute workhorse. Perhaps tried a bit too hard and lacked discipline? Really hope he’s okay. He will be crucial this season.

Cullen – 6

Reminds me of a young Mark Davies. He’s got quality which showed in patches today. Give him some game time and he could be great.

Le Fondre – 7

Worked tirelessly but given little to work with from midfield/wide men. Surprisingly good in the air. Never doubted he’d score his penalty.

Madine – 8

Fantastic display. Completely bossed the Leeds United defence, and also showed some quality on the ball. Very encouraging. Easy MotM.

Burke – 7

Tall, strong, quick, good on the ball – he certainly looked the part. Should be starting before long.

Buckley – 7

Made an impact when he came on.

Armstrong – N/A

Worked hard. Hope to see more of him – maybe against Crewe.

What are your thoughts? Too generous? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I didn’t think Howard or Darby had good games. Howard doesn’t appear to be the same man after his injury at Peterborough. He rarely commands his area and his kicking is sometimes suspect. Darby can’t play wing-back. He’s too slow and afraid to get forward. I was a bit disappointed with both Karacan and Cullen, although they came to in the second half more. Burke is a gem of a player. I hope he stays in the team. Hopefully, now they have had a taste of the Championship, the team will kick on.

  2. Quite right Jenny! He will develop into some player. I only wish he was ours. Compare him to Holding. Do you think West Ham would sell him for £2 million? Not on your nelly. Of course, we are skint. He should stay in our defence for the rest of the season for me, in either a back three with Wheats and Beevers or in place of Wheats in a back four. He’s big, powerful, quick, can tackle and pass a ball accurately, in fact a class act. Neither Wheats nor Beevers can match him for speed. No wonder some W Ham fans were a trifle sick to see him go out on loan again.

  3. Great idea, Nicky! Now you come to mention it, I noticed how he almost immediately began to marshal the rest of the defence. He was directing Beevers at times! That’s exactly the game Dawson played. Let’s hope he can score from set-pieces like Dawson as well!
