Chat with a fan ft. Chris Merrills

Chris Merrills faces the questions.

Why do you support Bolton?

I didn’t have much of a choice and to be honest glad I didn’t. My whole family are Wanderers fans and I wouldn’t have it any other way. As much as they really test you sometimes, there’s never a dull moment as a Bolton fan.

What has been your favourite game?

There are so many to choose from: European adventures, beating United, comebacks against Blackburn – all great moments. But the one match that stands out to me personally is the 2-1 win at home vs Liverpool in our first season back in the Prem. That season was my first with a season ticket and as such it was the first time I had seen us beat one of the ‘big teams’ live. Holdsworth scored the 90th winner, his 30 yard shot bobbling under Sander Westerveld  and i went crazy! It was our third win on the bounce and took us top of the league.

Who has been your favourite player of all time?

Again so many to choose from. Djorkaeff probably the best, Okocha the most skillful and Anelka the most unbelievable. But for me, Ivan Campo will always be my favourite. He just embraced us as a club in a way so similar to Super John. He played with a sense of fun and enjoyment but he had talent to go with it.

Prediction for this season?

I’m under no illusions that this season will be a struggle. Hopefully we can get the embargo lifted before January and have a real go, providing we aren’t too far adrift. I trust Parky to get us there though. I’d settle for just staying up but I think we may do a bit better. I’m going to go with 15th in the end.

Many thanks to Chris for his time. Do you want to be interviewed? Get in touch!
