Luke Murphy is reportedly set to sign having cancelled his contract at Leeds last night
I have see a fair amount of Luke Murphy. I watched him a lot at Crewe where he showed that he was simply too good for League 1 and League 2, and have kept tabs on him as he’s made the step up to the Championship.
While he’s never been a particular favourite of Leeds fans, I would be keen to stress that he did do some good things there. He played over 100 times in the league for Leeds during the three seasons he played there, before being ostracised and farmed out to Burton, where he was also a regular.
During his first season at Elland Road, he struggled slightly with the pace and physicality of the Championship. As we know, it is a real step up. However, next season, he managed to make the step up and was one of five players nominated for Leeds’ player of the season. He scored some stunning goals, and was rewarded with a four year contract, despite being injured at the time of signing it.
After that, he struggled to find form for Leeds, maybe perhaps down to the fact that he probably played under about 27 different managers during that period anyway. However, he clearly didn’t do that well.
So, sure, being loaned out to Burton, who went down, along with poor reviews from Leeds fans probably won’t fill Bolton fans with confidence, I’m keen that we don’t write Luke Murphy off. He has genuine talent, and is a real natural striker of the ball which actually is something we need as I feel neither Vela nor Lowe really offer that.
I see Murphy as a better (younger!) version of Gary O’Neil. I know many were underwhelmed at the thought of the 35 former West Ham man signing, but it was clear that we needed a good passer in the centre of the park. So now it looks like we’re about to get one.
Don’t believe that he’s good? Watch this. I know it’s only in the lower leagues, but come on…
Murphy, I think, could be a decent addition provided that he gets his form and confidence going. If only we had a manager who was good at working with players who were good in League 1; hadn’t quite proved themselves in the Championship and were lacking confidence… oh wait.
I trust Phil to get the best out of Muzzles, as he was known at Crewe. However, I do hope that he’s not the only central midfielder we sign, as we still do lack an enforcer/Karl Henry replacement.
In other news, it looks like we’re going for Joe Garner, with Charlie Wyke to go to Sunderland. Meanwhile, Antonee Robinson looks set to join Wigan (so we’re going to have to look for a left back elsewhere), and we are soon to announce the signing of Lindsay Yoan Zouma. Marc Iles’ piece on the Bolton News would provide a good update to those who aren’t so in the loop.
